Costumes are an essential part of every dance performance—they give shape, texture, and emotional depth to the choreography on stage. Over the years, our Festival has relied heavily on borrowed and rented costumes, alongside a small in-house collection, some pieces of which date back to the late 1980s. Today, we’ve reached a critical moment: rentals have become increasingly difficult to find, and many of our existing costumes are simply no longer sustainable for performances.
That’s why we created the Costume Fund. Contributions to this fund directly support the creation and renewal of costumes, ensuring our artists can continue to bring each work fully to life on stage. As dancer and choreographer Lauren Lovette so beautifully describes:
“It’s something magical, how a sheer piece of cloth worn by legendary predecessors I admire can turn a debut into a personal contribution to the thread of history. Costumes tell a story that way… you become a part of the very fabric of time.”
Even the most beloved and historically connected costumes must eventually be replaced so the next generation of ballerinas can carry the repertory forward. Our goal is to raise $50,000 by January 31, and we’re thrilled to share that we’re already halfway there.
